Malaria affects almost half of the world’s population and claims 655,000 lives every year, with over 90% of these deaths in Africa. Every life lost is needless as malaria is a preventable and treatable disease. The good news is that, today, over 485 children’s lives are saved from malaria every day, thanks to extraordinary international efforts to fight the disease. Globally, malaria deaths have dropped by 26% since 2000 and in Africa deaths have been cut by a third. We are committed to maintaining this momentum.
Our focus is on Africa where malaria has a disproportionate impact, claiming almost 1,600 lives every day. Malaria is a major contributor to a cycle of poverty in Africa, costing households up to 25% of their annual income and the continent’s economy £8 billion every year. Removing malaria as an obstacle to productivity will free vital resources to support other urgent health and development issues.
